Rules of Email

I have a couple of email rules, in addition to those posted on Seth Godin’s blog today,  which I recommend to anyone:

1. Never write anything in an email you wouldn’t want someone else to see.  Emails can be forwarded to unintended recipients by intent or accident, and often are.  If you haven’t learnt this the hard way yet – I’m saving you the discomfort!

2. Pick up the phone after 3 emails.  Email is not the tool for revolving complex issues, and if you’re debating something via email it’s time to use a more appropriate channel.  Make a phonecall or set up a meeting.

3. Never blind CC.  Pretty much the same reasons as rule no.1

4. Think carefully about your CC list.  Include people who really need to know, but don’t spam your whole team.  Knowing who to include in your communication at the right time shows judgement, and not doing so shows the lack of!
